One thing you can do now to improve your photography

You want to improve your photography – I get that. There is one thing you can start doing immediately. Get closer to your subject. Let me show you what I mean.

Boring, right? Let’s get closer.

It looks much better now. Another example:

Nice flowers but… there is way too much going on. We¬†can’t even decide what is the subject here. But let’s get closer again.

Tulips Charles Bridge

Different perspective, different photo. Ready to get closer?

Which camera is the best? Leica vs iPhone – photography has changed!

leics vs iphone
I was asked this question so many times and I have seen it being asked in all photography forums and on Quora that I realized I need to write an article about it. But first some numbers.
Thanks to we know which cameras were used to capture winning World Press Photo 2015 pictures. Here it goes:

Canon EOS 5D Mark III – 11
Canon EOS 1D X – 6
Canon EOS 5D Mark II – 4

Rest of the cameras below had only 1 winning picture:

Canon EOS 50D
Canon 1Ds Mark II
Nikon D3
Nikon D3X
Nikon D800
Nikon D700
Nikon D600
Nikon D4s
Nikon D3s
Apple iPhone
Olympus E-M1
Olympus E-M5
Ricoh GR
Phase One P45+
Leica M9
Mamiya 7
Hasselblad 500 C/M

Wait… did you noticed? APPLE IPHONE?? And Leica M9 had the same “score”? And medium format film camera – Mamiya 7? And digital medium format cameras like Phase One and Hasselblad? Seriously?

OK, you probably got my point – it doesn’t matter as much as most people think. Key is that you will not get any amazing results from medium format (like Phase One) or full frame (like the “winner” – Canon EOS 5d Mark III) if you can’t take a good shot with your iPhone or any other camera. You will just have more possibilities. So many in fact, that you may be overwhelmed.

“But really, what IS the best camera” you may ask… And again I cannot answer this question as the answer does not exist. It is like asking “what is the best car”. I may say it’s Ferrari 458 Italia but someone else can argue that it can’t go offroad as his Toyota. Plus how many people you can squeeze there? Now compare it to SUV’s…

You want to shoot sports? You may like Canon 1Dx. Travel photography? You may want to check Fujifilm X-T1. Street photographer? Check Leica M9 or Fujifilm X100T if on a budget. Commercial shoots that are going to be printed on huge billboards? You want megapixels and huge sensor – check Phase One or Hasselbad offerings. You need to zoom in to your birds? You may like Nikon D810. And these are just examples that we can count endlessly. In fact the best camera is the one you have with you but the most important things to give you great results are located between your ears.

5 tips on how to look good in photos – photography made easy

So you want to know how to look good in photos or make better photographs of other people? With these 10 rules you will improve drastically. Especially pt1 which is:

  1. Don’t do duckface. It’s ugly and stupid. Really… Next time you find yourself doing duckface just slap yourself really hard and wait for 15-30 minutes (you don’t want this huge red blemish on a photo… as you don’t want the duckface).
  2. Everything good with your face now? Good. Use long focal length. In most cases your face will not look good if taken with anything below 35mm (but it starts to look really good around 85..). If you don’t know what I am talking about now let me say it in different way: If you have a camera with optical zoom, tell the photographer to step back and zoom in. Your face will have better shape and proportions.
  3. Don’t look into the sun. It doesn’t look good when you have eyes full of tears and/or squinted.
  4. Don’t force smile. Tell a good joke that makes you laugh – you will look much better than with forced smile.
  5. Use dramatic lighting. Find a narrow slit of light in quite dark area or use a sunlight just before the sunset when the sun is really low. Try different poses and angles. Have fun and be original – who said that you have to look like everyone else? Don’t be boring!
